Bio

Linwood Wray Carlton was a famous 3-sport athlete at Wallace, NC High School. Wray scored 6 touchdowns in a single game as an All-State tailback, scored 48 points in a basketball game, and was good enough as a baseball shortstop to be offered a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He chose to accept a football scholarship to Duke University instead.

Wray was a 3 year letterman at Duke – 1956, ‘57, and ‘58. He was All State selection 2 years, All ACC 2 years, All Southern and All American. He broke Ace Parker’s career rushing and scoring records at Duke, set the ACC single game scoring record of 26 points against Virginia – and only played a half. He scored all of Duke’s points in games with Rice, Clemson, and Carolina while leading Duke to the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma. He played in the Shrine East/West game and the Hula Bowl Classic as a senior. Wray was drafted in 3rd round of pro draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wray played one year in Canada and 8 years with the Buffalo Bills. He still holds several rushing and scoring records with Buffalo and remains 4th all time Bills rusher. Wray was an integral part of the Bills 1964 & 1965 Championship Team and was chosen as running back on the Bills “Team of the Sixties.” He was All-Pro selection twice, and played in 2 all-star games, and 3 championship games. Wray ranks 9th all time AFL rusher.

Now retired from the trucking business, Wray and his wife Susan spend most of their time visiting their grandchildren, traveling, playing golf and maintaining their homes in Orchard Park, NY and Bald Head Island, NC.
