Tommy Greene played baseball for Whiteville High School then went on to become a professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1989-1995 and 1997. He pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Houston Astros.

In 1990 Tommy Greene was pitcher for the Atlanta Braves. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies along with Dale Murphy. In 1991, he pitched the National Leagues first No-Hitter of the year. A 2-0 win over the Montreal Expos. Tommy hit his first Major League home run against former team, the Atlanta Braves and finished the year 13-7. He was voted National League Pitcher of the month for the month of May.

In 1992 Tommy Greene became the Pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, and in 1993, he started the year 8-0 with 5 straight complete games, best start for a Phillies pitcher since Steve Carlton in 1983. In this year, Greene played a major role in the Phillies winning the National League Championship and was the winning pitcher in game 6 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves. He also pitched in the World Series.

Tommy Greene was ranked 6th place overall in the CY Young Award voting.

Greene pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies through 1996. In 1997, he went to Big League spring training camp with the Houston Astros and started out at triple “A” affiliate in New Orleans, LA until being called up to Houston to pitch for the Houston Astros.

In 1998 Tommy Greene went to big league spring training camp with the Atlanta Braves, and in 1999 he went to big leaguer spring training camp with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In 2000 Greene went to spring training camp with the Toronto Blue Jays and became Player/Coach for the New Jersey Jackals in the Eastern Division of the Northern League.

In 2001 Tommy Greene served as pitching coach for the Lincoln Salt Dogs in the Western Divison of the Northern League, and in 2006 he served as the General Manager for the Monroe Channelcats Baseball Team in Monroe, North Carolina.
