Bio
Scott Braswell established a distinguished legacy as a head football coach and administrator during his remarkable high school career.
Born in Tampa, Fla., and raised in Charlotte, Braswell compiled a 220-94 record as a head coach over 28 seasons and served as Director of Athletics at John T. Hoggard High School from 2008-16. The football facility at JTHS was renamed “Scott Braswell Stadium” in 2013.
Braswell began his coaching journey as an assistant at West Charlotte from 1982-89 and 1995-96. He served as defensive coordinator for the 1995 state championship team, which fashioned four straight shutouts en route to the state title.
He became head coach at Olympic High School and guided the Trojans from 1990-94. He flipped a struggling program, earning Coach-of-the-Year honors twice while leading Olympic to a pair of conference championships and only their second and third playoff appearances in the 25-year history of the program.
Braswell then moved to Wilmington in June of 1997 and the rest is history. He sparked the Vikings to 12 conference championships and three Final Four playoff appearances, capped by the state championship in 2007. The 2007 club was the top-ranked team in the final Associated Press poll.
Braswell earned a bevy of honors for his coaching prowess. He received the NCHSAA Homer S Thompson Memorial “Eight Who Make A Difference” Award in 2000 and was tabbed as the Shrine Bowl Coach in 2004 and NCCA East-West All-Star Game Coach in 2005. In addition, he was named Carolina Panthers NC-SC High School Coach of the Year in 2006, NCHSAA Tony Webb Coach of the Year in 2014-15 and received the NCHSAA Braveheart Award in 2015.
He later served as head coach at Woodberry Forest from 2017-21, collecting Coach of the Year accolades while leading the Tigers to a pair of prep league crowns.
As a player, Braswell was a three-sport letterman at Olympic. He earned All-Conference honors as the team’s quarterback and then played one season collegiately at Furman.
He has been married to his wife, Rita, for 38 years and they have two sons, Scott, Jr., and Matthew, and four grandchildren.
