Dr. David Esposito

Bio

Dr. David A. Esposito is the first physician to be inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. Espostio grew up in Connecticut and was a AAAA high school All-Conference, All-State athlete. He lettered in four varsity sports, but was captain of three. He went on to play division 1 soccer and rugby at the University of Connecticut.

Esposito planned to become a physical education teacher and coach, but an ACL tear sparked his interest in orthopedics and sports medicine. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and his residency at Boston University. In 1991 he scored in the top 1% of his board certification and orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Esposito has been committed to the regions sports and medical communities since moving to Wilmington in 1989. He founded Carolina Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Specialists in 1995 and has served as chair of prestigious committees to further orthopedic health.

Doctor Esposito has provided certified athletic trainers to the majority of area high schools. He recruited physicians and organized free sports physical screenings for area high school athletes, personally performing thousands of exams. He conducts no cost Saturday morning clinics during football season and provides free of charge care to patients of the Tileston Clinic.

He currently is the team physician consultant for 21 high schools in the region, and has raised more than $100,000 for their sports medicine programs and donated the first school defibrillator. Dr. Esposito was Ashley High School’s Men’s and Women’s Assistant Varsity Soccer Coach for 10 seasons. During his tenure, the teams made several tournament appearances including the Men’s team reaching the state semi-finals in 2006.

He’s coached numerous travel and recreational boy’s and girl’s soccer teams and served on the board of directors for the Cape Fear Soccer Association and Lacrosse Association.

Dr. Esposito has received many awards and commendations throughout his career, including the North Carolina AD Association distinguished service award.

Dr. Esposito and his wife Kathy have 4 children: Kelly, Michael, Colleen and Emily.
