Sherriedale Morgan was born in 1934. In 1952, he captured an Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) Championship. Two years later he enlisted in the Army.

While stationed in Fort Bragg, he won the Army Championship Boxing Title. After 22 years of service, Morgan retired from the military and the City of Wilmington hired him to operate its boxing program. The old firehouse on North Front Street was transformed into a gym that became known as the Wilmington Boxing Center. Later, a facility would be built on South Tenth Street that would be named in Morgan’s honor called the Sherriedale Morgan Boxing and Fitness Center.

Two of Morgan’s boxers were Deirdre Fabian who won the US Golden Gloves Championship in 1999 and Professional Heavyweight Boxer Donnell Holmes who has a 31-1-2 record.

Morgan was inducted into the Carolinas’ Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001 and in 2003 was inducted into the Greater Flint Afro-American Hall of Fame for coaching and boxing in Flint, Michigan.

Sherriedale Morgan died on September 17, 2009. Morgan’s wife of 30 Years, Yvonne Morgan, his daughter, Michelle Morgan Bellamy, his son-in-law, Jarvis Bellamy, two grandchildren, Joseph and David Bellamy, and his step-son Ricky Butler, survive him.
