Bio

Soccer and success became synonymous at UNC-Wilmington under the leadership of Calvin Lane, who built the program at UNCW into one of the most respected in the South. He served as head soccer coach for 15 seasons from 1971 – 1985 compiling a record of 129-94-19. Lane spent the first five seasons as member of NAIA and went 38-30-4. The final nine years were spent as NCAA Division 1 member and went 91-64-15. He had 10 winning seasons including five 10-win campaigns. He led the Seahawks to a 14-2 record and national ranking in 1980, the first national ranking for UNCW Division 1.

Lane coached the First-Team All-CAA performer Kevin Cox in 1984 and NAIA All-American – 1st team Gene Borowski in 1975.

In addition to his responsibilities at the university, Lane has also devoted much of his time developing youth soccer programs in the Wilmington. He served as the director of the very successful Seahawk Soccer Camp on the UNCW campus. Lane was a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association and a voting member of the regional rating board of all coaches in the South.

In the spring of 1985, Calvin took over the golf program at UNCW. Prior to that time, the golf program had several part-time coaches. Calvin inherited a program with five players and only one good golfer. Needless to say the program was at a low point.

During the next few years, he started recruiting top-flight talent to the program, and upgraded the schedule to include several outstanding tournaments each season. In the next 13 years they won seven tournaments and tied for first in two others. In the 15th year as golf coach his teams finished in 27 tournaments. In five of seven years they were second in the CAA tournament. His later teams were ranked in the top 90 in the country.

Calvin was responsible for starting a solid program and elevating it to a respectful Division 1 program. He also secured wonderful practice facilities, a good tournament schedule and some free equipment. The current men’s and women’s programs are benefiting from the foundation that Calvin provided.

Calvin received the following awards: NAIA District 29, Coach of the Year 1974, City of Wilmington Soccer Field named in his honor 1990, Chancellor Award – UNCW 1981, Pioneer of Soccer Award – North Carolina Youth Soccer Association 2005, Winner of Wilmington Senior Golf Championship 2007, Inducted into UNCW Sports Hall of Fame 2008 and Winner of numerous Senior and Super Senior Golf Tournaments 1993-2007.

In addition to Lane’s many sports awards and accolades, he has shown to be a great community leader. His many other accomplishments are: President, New Hanover County Principal’s Association; President and Membership Chairman, New Hanover County Unit NCEA; President, Cape Fear Sportsman’s Club; Director, Wilmington Youth Soccer; Board of Directors, NC Sports Hall of Fame; Chairman, NC Sports Hall of Fame Banquet; National Soccer Coaches Regional Rating Board; Soccer Senior Bowl Selection Committee; District 29 Soccer Committee; Board of Directors, Cape Fear Country Club; Member of Wilmington Athletic Association.
